Welcome to the mental health chronicles. A blog designed to provide educational information about mental health disorders, through stories of people struggling with various problems.

My name is Catherine Kioi, and I struggled with depression and anxiety as teenager and young adult. After changing careers from Computer Science to Psychology, I finally started to understand why I had struggled so much, and therefore sought help from a Psychologist. It made the biggest difference in my life.

In 2010, I decided to further my career by getting a Masters degree in Counseling Psychology, giving me an opportunity to work with several clients struggling with different mental health issues. It was an eye opener realizing that mental health does not discriminate, it affects children and adults, men and women, young and old, rich and poor.

The goal of this blog is to use my experience and education to teach people about various mental health disorders, their symptoms, treatment, and also provide resources for help. My hope is that these stories will help people better understand what they or their loved ones are going through, and thus reduce the stigma surrounding the topic.

Panel 1

Mental health involves our psychological, emotional, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices.

The main causes of mental health disorders include:

  1. Biological factors (e.g. genes or brain chemistry)
  2. Life experiences (e.g. trauma or abuse)
  3. Family history of mental health problems

People with mental health problems can get better, and most recover completely. The key is to seek help from a professional, and to build a good circle of support.
